1. Nigeria have emerged winners of the 2017 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
D’Tigress defeated Senegal 65-48 in the final of the tournament played on Sunday in Bamako, Mali. They had earlier defeated Mali 48-47 in the semi-final on Saturday.

2. Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, has said that the South-South and South East geo-political zones were the most politically and economically marginalized in the country. Address some eleven governors from the two regions in Port-Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, he said none of the airports and seaports located in the regions was reasonably functional, while the few federal roads are not in good shape, neither are the two regions linked by any rail services.

3. Tony Nwoye has emerged winner of the Anambra State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election. He will run against incumbent Governor, Willie Obiano of APGA on November 18. He scored 2,146 votes to defeat his closest rival, Senator Andy Uba who got 931 votes.

4. Report has it that the Academic Staff Union of Universities would likely meet with the Federal Government this week over the ongoing strike by the union. The report further claimed that the union would present its position to the government on the offers made by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, during their meeting on August 17, 2017 in Abuja.

5. A top Boko Haram Commander, Auwal Ismaeela, has confessed his crimes as an insurgent leader, saying he surrendered after realizing that the leaders of the religious extremist group took pride in preaching misleading sermons, raping women publicly, stealing, and carrying out deliberate barbaric indoctrination in some of the Boko Haram camps.

6. The Pan-Yoruba sociology-cultural group, Afenifere, has questioned the Federal Government on why it failed to arrest the Arewa youths, but making moves to arrest Nnamdi Kanu of IPOB. The group’s publicity secretary, Yinka Odumakin, warned against Kanu’s re-arrest, which he said would overheat the polity. He stressed that the government should rather engage in dialogue with IPOB members instead of going after them.

7. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha caused the deaths recorded in the demolition exercise carried out at the Eke-Ukwu’s market in the State. In statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the PDP condemned the sad incident, stating that despite an existing court order restraining the State government from the exercise, the demolition was carried out.

8. The Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has accused the Minister of Interior, Abdurahman Dambazzu, of deliberate attempts to cover the truth in order to shield Arewa youths from arrest and prosecution over the quit notice they slammed on Igbos residing in the Northern part of Nigeria. According to MASSOB, the explanation given by the Minister that Arewa youths were quoted out of context holds no waters as the quit notice was recorded on video and published for objective review and criticism.

9.The naira closed at 370 to the United States dollar on Friday, as dollar supply from the Central Bank of Nigeria has reduced drastically. The currency, which previously stood between 360 and 365 to the dollar, has been battling for survival lately.

10. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has described as unnecessary the controversies over the reduction of cut-off marks for 2017 admission exercise into tertiary institutions by stakeholders at its policy meeting. JAMB said rather than criticisms, Nigerians should be concerned about how to address the flight of citizens in glorified secondary schools called foreign Universities in places like country Ghana, Uganda, Gambia and others.

The Newspapers – Things You Need To Know This Sunday

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.

2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.

3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.

4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.

5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.

6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.

7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.

8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.

9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.

10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
