1. Soldiers attached to Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), a multi-security task force, maintaining peace in Plateau State, on Friday night allegedly beat a taxi driver, Sadik Abdullahi Karafa to death. The deceased was reportedly beaten by the soldiers stationed at Paringada Market while returning from Mangu before the curfew hour. Abdullahi Karafa, an elder brother of the deceased confirmed the incident yesterday.
2. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied a claim that it directed banks to convert all customers’ domiciliary accounts meant for dollars and other hard currency transactions into naira accounts. In a statement on Saturday, Director, Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, the apex bank said a fake circular with a fake CBN logo curiously dated “13 September 2021” (next Monday), and purportedly issued by its Trade and Exchange Department directed that all Deposit Money Banks, International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) and members of the public are to convert domiciliary account holdings into naira.
3. Human rights lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), says that the ruling of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Friday means that the Rivers State Government has the power to collect Value Added Tax until the court decides otherwise. The lawyer stated this in a statement on Saturday titled, ‘FIRS & Rivers State Government: Who Should Now Collect VAT?’
4. Twenty people have reportedly died of cholera, while 190 others were infected with the disease following the recent flood in Gololo town in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The chairman of the Gololo Community Service, Honourable Abba Alhaji Gololo, revealed this to journalists, saying that cholera outbreak in the town was as a result of stagnant floodwater in different parts of the community.
5. Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has vowed to clamp down on bandits terrorizing some parts of the state, saying they have rejected the peace hitherto extended to them. He stated this while addressing a congregation in Gusau, the state capital on Saturday.
6. President Muhammadu Buhari has met with members of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, led by its President, Prof Innocent Ujah at the State House, Abuja even as he appealed to the striking resident doctors to call off the strike. The President who said he was delighted to host the NMA President and members of his delegation, assured the NMA delegation of his administration’s commitment towards ensuring all the terms of the agreement entered into between his government and the various affiliates of the association.
7. A 23-year-old student of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, (Auchi Poly), Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, identified as Solomon Oboh, has committed suicide shortly after classes on Friday. The spokesperson of the school, Mustapha Oshiobugie confirmed the incident.
8. Police in Kano State have arrested a man and his wife over alleged kidnapping of a newborn baby at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital Kano. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday.
9. Benue State Government has advised Miyetti Allah groups and others who want the state to repeal the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law to stop daydreaming, saying the state will on no condition repeal the law. The resolute declaration of the government came in a statement titled, ‘MACBAN Spokesman and His Many Contradictions’ which was signed by Governor Samuel Ortom’s Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase and made available to newsmen yesterday.
10. Scores of armed bandits fleeing the ongoing military operations in Zamfara and Katsina States on Friday afternoon met their Waterloo in the hands of soldiers at Maganda village near Allawa in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. The bandits who were escaping through the notorious Allawa forest in their hundreds ran into the military camp stationed at Alawa and engaged the soldiers in a serious gun battle for several hours.
