1. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed sixteen new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

NCDC, which made the announcement Tuesday night via its Twitter handle, said 10 cases were reported in Lagos, 2 in the FCT, 2 in Oyo, 1 in Delta and 1 in Katsina.

2. Seven patients will be discharged in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), after testing negative to COVID-19.

The FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello, who confirmed the development, said the patients are ready to be discharged after their final tests results returned negative.

3. The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, on Tuesday, claimed he would crumble Nigeria without firing a single shot but will use the truth.

In a statement, the IPOB leader also said the Nigerian presidency has crumbled due to the consistency of his group.

4. Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries has faulted those criticizing Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Believers Love World, popularly known as Christ Embassy, for his revelation on 5G network and Coronavirus.

Suleman stated that rather than attack Oyakhilome for his claim, critics should assert their counter claim or remain quiet.

5. Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has sacked the Vice-Chancellor of the Kogi State University, Ayangba, Prof Mohammed Abdulkadir and Prof. Mohammed Atureta as the Rector of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Folasade Ayoade, said the governor had approved the appointment of Prof. Marietu Tenuche as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University, while Dr. Salisu Usman would act as the Rector of the polytechnic.

6. Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has confirmed the State’s first coronavirus case.

Okowa, in a tweet on Tuesday night, disclosed the patient is already receiving treatment at its isolation center.

7. Tony Momoh, a former Minister of Information, has given reasons President Muhammadu Buhari cannot lead Nigeria’s military against Boko Haram terrorists like his Chadian counterpart, Idriss Deby.

Momoh, who is one of the national leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said Buhari as the Commander-in- Chief of the armed forces does not need to lead the troops as he can monitor the military from anywhere in Nigeria.

8. The Lagos State Police Command has released on bail the governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party in the state in the 2019 gubernatorial election, Babatunde Gbadamosi, and his wife.

The duo had on Monday turned themselves in at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, and were detained after the police asked them and others, who attended a birthday party organised by a popular actress, Funke Akindele-Bello, aka Jenifa, to report at the SCIID.

9. Mr. Adamu Mohammad, elder brother to Gov. Bala Mohammad of Bauchi State, has been released by kidnappers who abducted him last month.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Kamal Abubakar, who confirmed the release, said the victim was released by his captors on Tuesday.

10. The United States Government on Tuesday gave an update on evacuation of its citizens in Nigeria and other countries amid the COVID-19 global crisis.

They were airlifted with a B777-300 aircraft from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The Newspapers – Things You Need To Know This Sunday

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.

2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.

3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.

4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.

5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.

6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.

7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.

8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.

9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.

10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
