1. The Presidency has condemned the decision of the United States, US, to include Nigeria in its “special watch list” of countries that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom”. Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, who faulted the decision, said nobody appointed US as policeman of the world. Adesina also urged the US government and other foreign nations to focus on its own issues and stop meddling in Nigerian affairs. He insisted that the US Secretary of States, Mike Pompeo does not have a clear understanding of what is going on in Nigeria.
2. A federal high court in Lagos on Monday dismissed Orji Uzor Kalu’s application for bail. Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court dismissed Kalu’s bail pending the determination of his appeal against his fraud conviction. Justice Liman said there was no evidence to prove the senator was suffering from chronic diseases.
3. The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has announced the official date for the commencement of the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB registrar, disclosed that UTME for 2020 will be between March 14 and April 4. He said this at a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday in Abuja.
4. The founder of Sotitobire Miracle Centre in Ondo State, Prophet Babatunde Alfa has been remanded at Olokuta Correctional Centre. Prophet Alfa who was dragged before an Akure Magistrate Court on Monday by the Department of State Security, DSS, was accused of allegedly being involved in the mysterious disappearance of a one-year-old boy, Gold Kolawole from his church. The embattled Prophet was ordered to be remanded in prison by Magistrate Charity Adeyanju alongside six workers of the church who were said to be manning the church’s children department when the incident occurred.
5. The governorship candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) in Ogun State, Hon. Adekunle Akinlade on Monday said he would be leading his supporters across the state back to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This follows the Supreme Court’s Wednesday dismissal of Akinlade’s petition, challenging the election of Gov Dapo Abiodun of the APC. Speaking to his supporters at the APM Secretariat in Leme Abeokuta, Akinlade said he and other candidates of the APM in Ogun State, left the APC in 2018 to protest what he called the injustice meted out to them by the APC National Working Committee (NWC) led by Adams Oshiomhole.
6. President Muhammdu Buhari has reacted to a statement by legal luminary, Femi Falana alleging that there was a third term agenda for President Muhammadu Buhari. A statement issued by Garba Shehu, the presidential aide on Media and Publicity, described Falana’s revelation as false. The Presidency stressed that Buhari was a democrat and will under no circumstance seek to amend the Constitution regarding the two-term term limit on holding office as President.
7. Civil society organisations, CSOs, on Monday clashed in Abuja over calls for the enforcement of the human rights of Omoyele Sowore, the convener of RevolutionNow Movement, and others unlawfully detained by the Department of State Services, DSS. While those on the side of Sowore marched to the National Human Rights Commission in the Nigerian capital, those who believe DSS was doing the right thing by detaining Sowore stormed the commission with their placards. This led to violence and many activists were consequently injured.
8. President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Monday, sacked Postmaster General of the Federation, Mr Bisi Adegbuyi. He was replaced by Dr Ismail Adewusi. Femi Adesina, Buhari media aide announced the replacement of Adegbuyi in a statement. The president also made fresh appointments in parastatals under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy.
9. The police in Lagos State Monday arrested and detained a member of the House of Representatives, Shina Peller, at the Maroko Police Station. Peller, who is representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency, Oyo State, was arrested while trying to take the bail of some clubbers. But after few hours in detention, he was released and the case has now been taken over by the CID. His club, Quilox, has equally been shut down by the Lagos State government.
10. The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State to “sheathe their swords”. PDP, in a statement on Monday by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, called on the two governors to allow the leadership of the party resolve the matter amicably. PDP stressed that the arguments between Wike and Dickson is ‘skin-deep and only borne out of their love and zeal for their respective states.’

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.
2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.
3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.
4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.
5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.
6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.
7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.
8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.
9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.
10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
