1. The Police Command in Niger State has said gunmen killed an unspecified number of people while observing early morning prayers at a Mosque at Mazakuka village in Mashegu Local Government Area of the state. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Monday Kuryas, who disclosed this to Newsmen in Minna on Monday, said the hoodlums also abducted seven other worshipers from the mosque.

2. The Federal Government has vowed not to allow terror elements hijack the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State, saying there is no need to embark on an exercise of self delusion. National Security Adviser NSA, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Monguno, stated this on Monday at a special meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security ICCES in Abuja.

3. Contrary to some media reports that the national elective convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, may be postponed, the National Working Committee, NWC, has said the October 31st date for the exercise stands. Addressing newsmen at the party’s national secretariat, Abuja, spokesman of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan said the convention committee is working relentlessly to conduct the exercise as planned.

4. President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, said the adoption of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) and its underlying technology, called blockchain, can increase Nigeria’s GDP by $29billion over the next 10 years. The President said this Monday in Abuja at the official launch of the e-Naira.

5. Sheik Ahmad Gumi has asked clerics from the Southern part of the country to engage those behind uprising in the region the same way he does to bandits. The cleric said this in a statement he issued in reactions to the call for bandits to be declared as terrorists.

6. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has regretted the detention of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, in Benin Republic. In an interview on Monday, the monarch said the agitator rejected advice offered him by monarchs sent to dialogue with him. Ooni narrated that he met President Muhammadu Buhari, over Sunday Igboho.

7. Akwa Ibom State Government plans to spend a total of N582.115 billion for the 2022 fiscal year, Governor Udom Emmanuel has declared. The Governor who stated this while presenting the 2022 financial estimates to the legislature in Uyo on Monday said, the budget is prepared in accordance with the International Public Accounting standard (IPSAS) Accrual template.

8. The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday, rejected Federal Government planned enforcement of COVID-19 vaccination on workers and Nigerians. The NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, expressed labour’s position while unveiling the COVID-19 vaccination Advisory for the Federal Civil Servants on Monday in Abuja.

9. Four people have been killed and three others injured during a clash between locals and some herders in Jankasa, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. According to reports from military and police authorities, the clash occurred along some cattle routes in the area, and then escalated into a firefight between the two groups, before security forces arrived to bring the situation under control.

10. Lawyers from the Southeastern region of Nigeria have applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja to be joined as defendants in a suit by a group of northern elders praying for the exit of the southeast region from Nigeria. The legal practitioners are led by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Chief Chuks Muoma.

The Newspapers – Things You Need To Know This Sunday

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.

2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.

3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.

4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.

5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.

6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.

7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.

8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.

9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.

10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
