1. The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday passed the Police Reform Bill.

The Bill will now be transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence.

2. The Olowo of Owo in Ondo State, Oba Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi, CFR, is dead.

The monarch died last night at the age of 77.

3. The governorship election of John Kayode Femi of Ekiti State has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

In a unanimous judgment of a five-man panel led by Justice Amiru Sanusi, on Wednesday, the apex court held that the appeal by Segun Oni, was statute barred.

4. Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for his government’s inability to pay workers’ salaries and pension.

According to his spokesman, Kingsley Fanwo, the last PDP administration embarked on failed projects through bonds, which indebted the state.

5. President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to produce his academic credentials before the Presidential Election Tribunal.

Buhari, in a response filed on April 16 by a team of lawyers led by Wole Olanipekun (SAN), said that the claim by Atiku and the PDP that he was not qualified to stand for election to the office of the President was a lie.

6. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of members of the Board of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), a parastatal agency of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Mrs. Rhoda Iliya, Assistant Director Press in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, said the board will be headed by Mr. Austin Enajemo-Isire, a Chartered Accountant, professional Insurance Executive and Banker with Mrs. Ijeoma Okoronkwo as Secretary.

7. President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered no fewer than 13 heads of parastatals and agencies under the federal ministry of finance including his ex-chief of staff and Customs Comptroller General, Hameed Ali, to submit their handing over notes latest by April 23.

The directive was contained in a circular with reference no: FMF/PSSD/HON/32 signed by the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed.

8. A group, under the umbrella of Coalition of Joint Civil Society Action against Extra-Judicial killings, on Wednesday, asked the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to apologise to the family of late Ogah Jumbo, who was murdered last month.

At a peaceful rally organised by the coalition in Abuja on Wednesday, the group also faulted the Commandant General (CG) of Civil Defence, Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, for playing down the death of one of his men.

9. A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Wednesday dismissed a suit filed by Spectrum Wireless Communications Limited against Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services (EMTS), owners of 9mobile, challenging the sale of the company.

The court, Presided by Justice CJ Aneke, in a ruling on the preliminary objections file by counsel to EMTS, upheld that the defendant’s prayers in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/153/2018 that there was no direct shareholding relationship between Spectrum Wireless and EMTS, thereby vesting on Spectrum the right to sue EMTS to protect its alleged shareholding in EMTS.

10. The Senate, on Wednesday passed a bill for an Act to Prohibit Gas Flaring in Nigeria.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Bassey Apkan, seeks to ensure that any person who acted on behalf of a licensee to supply inaccurate data to the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) or to any other person duly empowered by a lawful authority, commits an offence.

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.

2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.

3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.

4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.

5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.

6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.

7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.

8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.

9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.

10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
