1.The Nigerian Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, have debunked the claims by Mr. Abdulrasheed Maina that he was still under the payroll of the Federal Civil Service of Nigeria. The duo gave this testimony on Thursday, at the ongoing public hearing into the disappearance, reappearance, reinstatement and subsequent promotion of Mr. Maina to the rank of Deputy Director at the Ministry of Interior.
2. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar will not be allowed to vote at the party’s national convention come December 9 which holds at Eagles Square, Abuja. Spokesperson for the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, told journalists that the decision was in line with the party’s constitution that deals with new entrants into the party. He would, however, be allowed to deliver a speech at the convention.
3. President Muhammadu Buhari has signed three bills, earlier passed by the National Assembly, into law. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday. They include, Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy (Establishment) Bill, 2017, Air Force Institute of Technology of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2017, National Intelligence Agency Pensions (Establishment) Bill, 2017.
4. Two children were on Wednesday assassinated by unknown gunmen at Obiokpok in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Report saysthe two children were killed and placed in a table top freezer by gunmen after their father, Aniekan Billie went out to buy food items. According to their father, he discovered the bodies of two of his children, Godwin Sunday, nine (M) and Idara Sunday, five (F) in his table top freezer upon his return.
5. Report says Nigeria will take on England in an international friendly in June, ahead of the 2018 World Cup. This was disclosed by the General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mohammed Sanusi.
6. The Federal Executive Council, has mandated the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, and Maikanti Baru, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), to end the fuel scarcity across the country by the end of this week. The directive was issued at the FEC meeting presided by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.
7. The Court of Appeal sitting in Ado-Ekiti has upheld the election of the Senator representing Ekiti Central, Mrs. Fatimat Raji Rasaki. The three-man panel led by Justice Ahmad Belgore ruled that Senator Rasaki was the valid candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the senatorial district in the April 11, 2015 National Assembly elections.
In upholding Senator Rasaki’s candidacy, the appellate court dismissed the appeal filed by another candidate at the PDP senatorial primary, Mr. Lateef Ajijola.
8. The Federal Government has approved the establishment of six new private universities in the country. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. They are Admiralty University, Ibusa, Delta State, Spiritan University, Nneochi, Abia State, Precious Cornerstone University, Ibadan, Pamo University of Medical Sciences, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Atiba University, Oyo State, and Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences Lagos.
9. The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, said it has arrested a retired Appeal Court judge, Justice Mohammed Tsamiya, for allegedly demanding a N200m bribe in exchange for a favourable judgment in a National Assembly election case that was pending before the Imo State Judicial Division of the Court of Appeal. It said Justice Mohammed Tsamiya allegedly demanded N200m bribe from one Mr. Nnamdi Orji.
10. A policeman attached to the Igbuzo Police Division, one Sergeant Abua, has allegedly gone into hiding after shooting a student at the Delta State Polytechnic, Sofia Ogogo, and a civil servant, Victor Emeagwai, at a checkpoint in the community. Report says the victims were in a Toyota Corolla, driven by an estate agent, Jerry Akinlabi, when the incident happened.

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.
2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.
3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.
4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.
5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.
6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.
7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.
8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.
9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.
10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
