1. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday announced the creation of additional 56, 872 Polling Units (PUS) across the country. INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakabu said in Abuja yesterday that the new PUs were historical because they were achieved 25 years after previous attempts.

2. The Nigerian Army on Wednesday said gun alone cannot stop the prevailing security threats across the land. Army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, who spoke in Abuja said the myriads of security challenges required multifaceted approach to surmount.

3. The Federal Government on Wednesday sought power to regulate private broadcasting in the country using the internet and other online outlets, saying the government has an obligation to monitor broadcast content. Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed spoke at a public hearing on a bill to amend the National Broadcasting Act.

4.Tempo of political activities were raised in Ekiti and Osun states, following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s release of governorship election dates. Ekiti will go to the poll on June 18, 2022 while it will be the turn of Osun to elect its governor on July 18, 2022, according to INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

5. The Federal Government on Wednesday urged power sector stakeholders to do more towards boosting electricity supply. Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman and his state counterpart, Goddy Agba met with the management of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

6. the Presidency on Wednesday said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors are seeking more money for their own profligate political ends. The accusation was contained in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

7. The emeritus Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Cardinal Anthony Okogie, has lamented the insecurity in the country, saying the country is becoming a killing field. Okogie, at his 85th birthday thanksgiving and 50th Episcopal ordination anniversary on Wednesday in Lagos, also said the country was becoming a failed state.

8. Five security operatives, including four policemen and an NSCDC officer, have been killed in a gun duel with bandits in Gora Namaye community in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The state police command through its spokesman, SP Muhammad Shehu confirmed the attacks on Wednesday.

9. Members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) overran a military formation in the southern part of Borno State on Tuesday and cart away weapons after a gun battle with the troops. A member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), Hamidu Abu confirmed the incident on Wednesday.

10. The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, Ondo State capital has upheld the election of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and his Deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the October 10, 2020 election. The five-man panel led by Justice Theresa Orji-Abadua gave the judgement after dismissing the appeal of Eyitayo Jegede, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the election for lacking in merit.

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.

2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.

3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.

4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.

5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.

6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.

7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.

8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.

9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.

10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
