1. The Nigeria Police on Saturday announced the arrest of popular music artiste, Duncan Mighty.

A statement by SP Ikeokwi Godson Orlando, spokesman of the Imo State Police Command, said the arrest followed a petition written by an up and coming rap artist M2, who claimed that the Imo state government under former governor, Rochas Okorocha, through the office of the SA on Entertainment, entered into a deal with Duncan Mighty.

2. A senior lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Prof. Jerome Elusiyan, was on Friday shot dead by unknown gunmen at Iruekpen, a local government area in the Central District of Edo State.

Report said Professor J.B.E ELUSIYAN was on his way back from Ekpoma where he went to invigilate medical students of the Ambrose Alli University when this unfortunate incident happened.

3. The Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Segun Runsewe, has frowned at the suspension of Turkish Airlines from the Nigerian air space for disrespecting Nigerians.

He described the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) intervention as bold and courageous, adding that the time has come for all foreign airlines and other service providers in Nigeria to respect and treat Nigerians decently.

4. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and ex-Lagos governor, Bola Tinubu, met on Saturday.

The leaders, who met in Minna, Niger State, were in a cordial mood as they exchanged pleasantries and chatted, a development many Nigerians described as ‘2023 agenda.’

5. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, on Sunday called on the National Judicial Council, NJC, to sack the Chief Justice of the Federation, CJN, Tanko Muhammad for allegedly attempting to start a religious conflict in Nigeria.

HURIWA, a prominent civil rights advocacy group claimed that Tanko was attempting to instigate religious conflict in Nigeria by advocating for full Sharia law in the country’s constitution.

6. A former Zamfara State Senator, Kabir Marafa, has alleged that some governors of the All Progressives Congress, APC, loyal to Abdulaziz Yari, immediate past governor of the state are working to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari and his loyalists are edged out of the party structure, ahead of 2023.

Marafa warned that those governors, who he did not identify, were determined to render Buhari politically irrelevant, ahead of 2023 election.

7. Sun Newspaper has confirmed that officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with heavily armed policemen on Saturday, stormed the corporate headquarters of The Sun Publishing Limited at 2, Coscharis Street, Kirikiri Industrial Layout, Apapa, Lagos.
The management of the media outfit in a statement said the officials put up a notice for staff and the general public to keep off the premises.

8. The Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammed Babandede, has said the visa on arrival for holders of passports of African countries from January 2020 was to accelerate African Integration.

Babandede in a statement by Mr Sunday James, the service Public Relations Officer, in Abuja said the decision would remove barriers hindering free movement of people within the continent.

9. A Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions of Kaduna State has suspended its planned strike over poor salary.

The institutions earlier affected were Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria; College of Education, Gidan-Waya, Kafanchan; Shehu Idris College of Health and Science Tech.

10. The people of Ijaw have provided the reasons former President Goodluck Jonathan had to work against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and governor Seriake Dickson in the governorship election in the State.

Giving the reasons, the Ijaw Monitoring Group, IMG, also warned a former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido to henceforth, stop rubbishing their son, Jonathan, with blackmail.

The Newspapers – Things You Need To Know This Sunday

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.

2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.

3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.

4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.

5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.

6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.

7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.

8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.

9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.

10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
