1. The decision of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to embark on an indefinite strike or not will be disclosed at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, on Monday. The NEC had started holding meetings since Saturday, but another meeting has been scheduled to begin at 12 midnight on Sunday.

2. Scores of hoodlums allegedly responsible for the killing of three people in Oremeji Agugu area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, during a mayhem between hoodlums (Federal Boys) and members of the Motor Park Managers (PMS) have been arrested by the police, police spokesman in the State, Adewale Oyeifeso, said on Sunday.

3. Nigeria’s Women Basketball team, D’Tigress, have defeated Mali to clinch the last qualifying spot for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. China and France had booked their spots at the World Cup due to their superior point differential.

4. Residents of Abuja and neighbouring States of Niger and Nasarawa are still facing tough times sourcing for Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, with the commodity selling for as high as N400/litre by black marketers.

5. A section of Atakumosa Market, Ereja Square, Ilesa, Osun State, has been razed by fire. It was gathered that the shops were razed with goods in the building destroyed before the fire was brought under control.

6. An Indian businessman, Vyapak Nutal, has been taken into custody by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency over alleged smuggling of 134,700 bottles of codeine syrup into the country through the land border between Nigeria and Niger Republic in Sokoto State. The spokesperson for the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi confirmed this on Sunday.

7. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, won three out of the six Federal Capital Territory’s area councils in the just-concluded election. The three area councils won by the PDP are Kuje, Bwari and the Abuja Municipal Area Councils. The National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu described the party’s rebound in the election as a great omen.

8. A commercial motorcyclist, otherwise known as okada rider, was in the early hours of Sunday shot dead at Leme area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. The deceased, who was identified as Ashimiu Lawal, was found in the pool of his blood without his motorcycle.

9. The Senate has summoned the management of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, over an alleged contracts scam put at N100 billion. Senator Matthew Urhoghide, PDP, Edo State led Senate Committee on Public Accounts that is probing the NDDC, said that it will personalize any refund that would be traceable to an individual during the Investigative hearing.

10. A pro-Bola Tinubu coalition, the Support Groups Management Council, says the viral photograph of the All Progressives Congress leader pictured in a wet dress is the work of mischief-makers. In a statement on Sunday, the coalition said the viral photo was manipulated, noting that Tinubu is healthy and physically fit to be Nigeria’s President in 2023, contrary to claims by propagandists.

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.

2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.

3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.

4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.

5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.

6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.

7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.

8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.

9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.

10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
