1. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday night, announced 298 new confirmed COVID-19 cases.

The new cases were reported from 16 states: Plateau (108), Kaduna (49), Lagos (47), Ogun (18), Osun (17), FCT (15), Ondo (14), Edo (8), Oyo (6), Akwa Ibom (4), Cross River (4), Borno (3), Ekiti (2), Bauchi (1), Kano (1) and Rivers (1).

2. Human Rights Writers Association, HURIWA has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari government to investigate Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the Governor of Kaduna State.

According to HURIWA, El-Rufai should be compelled to produce the killers of the innocent Nigerians in Southern Kaduna since he has been able to identify them and their locations.

3. The Ghanaian authorities have said Nigerian shop owners in the country must pay taxes and other fees imposed on them.

The country’s Ministry of Trades, while insisting on the payment, said that claims of unfair treatment on Nigerian traders in the enforcement of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council regulations were not true.

4. The Lagos State government has extended the hours of operations of both food markets and non-food markets in the State.

Gboyega Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday, said the decision was taken to further enhance trade and commerce and mitigate the hardship of COVID-19 pandemic.

5. Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Sunday insisted that the incessant Southern Kaduna crisis will stop when people in the region are willing to embrace peace.

El-Rufai said that no number of military troops can resolve the crisis in Southern Kaduna, adding that it is far more complicated than what is obtained in other parts of Nigeria.

6. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, of printing illegal Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs.

The party’s spokesman, Chris Osa Nehikhare, said security agencies have been informed about the matter but nobody has been arrested.

7. The Presidency, on Sunday night, warned a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, not to drag President Muhammadu Buhari into whatever issues he has with security agencies.

Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA), Mallam Garba Shehu, in a statement decried what he described as Na’Abba’s “publicity stunt” because the President has no issues with him.

8. Fire, on Sunday afternoon, razed down a section of Igbudu market in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Properties, including a building reportedly worth several millions of naira were destroyed in the inferno.

9. Oyo State Police Command on Sunday announced that a suspected serial killer, Mr. Sunday Shodipe has escaped from police custody.

The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP. Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, CP implored the general public to be on the lookout, arrest and immediately inform the officers and men of the Command when sighted for immediate handing over for further action.

10. Suspected gunmen have abducted Alhaji Isa Mai Buba, the District Head of Mashio town in Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State.

ASP Dungus Abdulkarim, Public Relations Officer, Yobe State Police Command on Sunday, said the yet-to-be identified gunmen stormed the resident of the District Head yesterday at about 10pm with heavy fire arms and disappeared with him into the thin air.

The Newspapers – Things You Need To Know This Sunday

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.

2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.

3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.

4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.

5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.

6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.

7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.

8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.

9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.

10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
