Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1. The Christian Association of Nigerian, CAN, has called on the Federal Government to compensate the victims of the New Year day killings in Benue State, where over 73 lives were lost. Speaking on Monday at the stakeholders’ meeting organized for members of the National Economic Council Committee on the herdsmen/ farmers crisis in Makurdi, the Benue State chairmen of CAN, Rev. Akpen Leva lamented that the people had been abandoned by the Federal government despite the huge losses they suffered directly and indirectly.
2. Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has warned his Plateau State, Simon Lalong against interfering in the affairs of the state. Governor Ortom gave the warning early hours of Monday at a stakeholders’ meeting with the National Economic Council, NEC, technical committee on herdsmen/ farmers crisis resolution led by Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi.
3. Suspected members of Fulani herdsmen have killed two staff of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC. The officers identified as Adams Godwin and Abah Patrick, were killed in Awange near Kasseyo Town in Guma LGA of the state Monday evening. The Public Relations Officer, PRO, of NSCDC in Benue, Peter Adakole, said his men also killed some members of the killer herdsmen.
4. No fewer than 3 police officers from Ebonyi State police command whose names were yet to be identified have been gruesomely murdered by unknown assailants. The victims were deployed by the Ebonyi State police command to maintain peace and order at the Ikwo/ Cross River communal war.
5. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem, has decried the destruction of the school’s multi-million naira research and training farms by cattle illegally grazing on the campus. He also said the cattle had poisoned the dam.
This is contained in the University weekly Bulletin issued on Monday.
6. Thirty-six states governors on Monday endorsed the creation of state police to address rising insecurity in the country. Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdulaziz Yari stated this during the National Security Summit organized by the Senate in Abuja.
The Governors endorsement came days after the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo backed the creation of state police.
7. President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said his security chiefs are determined to implement solutions that would bring an end to the current security challenges facing Nigeria. This was part of the issues discussed during Buhari’s meeting with his security chiefs earlier at the Presidential Villa. According to the President, he and his security chiefs “fully understand the seriousness and urgency of Nigeria’s security issues.”
8. Report says A former Governor of Kano State and Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, may dump the All Progressives Congress (APC). He is said to be waiting on the outcome of peace moves initiated last week by President Muhammadu Buhari, to resolve intra-party crisis in some states. A source in his camp gave some of the reasons that made Kwankwaso to conclude that now is the best time to leave the APC.
9. About 50 policemen were Monday deployed to the National Health Insurance Scheme headquarters in Abuja. This follows a pro and an anti-Yusuf rally staged simultaneously by staff of the Scheme on Monday. The policemen were deployed to NHIS to avert a possible clash of the two group of protesting workers.
10. The lawmaker representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye has accused the federal government of plotting to frame him for a crime he didn’t commit in a bid to shut him up and prevent him from criticizing the government. Melaye, on his twitter page accused the FG of conniving with the police and the minister of justice to accuse him of lying about his assassination attempt in 2017.

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.
2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.
3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.
4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.
5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.
6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.
7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.
8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.
9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.
10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
