1. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday received signatures from the electorates in Kogi West Senatorial District demanding the recall of lawmaker representing the district, Dino Melaye from the Senate.
The electorates submitted their signatures at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja in six bags.
2. Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has declared his intentions to take over the mantle of leadership from President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock.
The governor, who spoke in a rally held in the state capital yesterday, told the crowd that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will take over the presidential villa from the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2019.
3. State governors, yesterday, said they had resolved that they would not allow Nigeria to break up, stating that those fanning the embers of war were wasting their time.
Oyo State Governor, Abiola, Ajimobi, who spoke on behalf of the other governors, after their meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the governors and other stakeholders had agreed that despite the agitations being witnessed in parts of the country, Nigeria must not break.
4. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, has announced that he authorised the filing of an appeal against the judgment of the Code of Conduct Tribunal which acquitted the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, of all 18 charges of false asset declaration preferred against the former Kwara State governor.
The AGF maintained that despite some recent setbacks suffered by the anti-corruption war, the fight would continue to be fought “resolutely, painstakingly, doggedly, purposefully and determinedly with all the constitutional and legal arsenals at the disposal of the Federal Government of Nigeria.”
5. Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, has slammed governors of the South-East states for putting on “Hausa/Fulani traditional attire” at public functions.
MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, in a statement, specifically flayed the governors of Ebonyi and Enugu states, Dave Umahi and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, respectively, for putting on Hausa/Fulani attire at the recent meeting between Igbo leaders and the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa.
6. Acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has filed a suit at a Lagos High Court, against The Sun newspaper for N100m over an alleged defamation.
Magu, in his statement of claims, signed by his lawyer, Wahab Shittu, wants the court to declare that the story published in Saturday Sun of March 25, 2017, which talked about two houses allegedly linked to his wife, defamed him.
7. Report by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs has projected Nigeria to be the world’s third most populous country by the year 2050.
The report entitled “World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision”, said with such development, Nigeria would overtake the United States in terms of population just as world population would reach 9.8 billion people.
8. Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State, Chief Henry Ajomale has hinted that former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Bode George is on his way to joining the APC.
According to Ajomale, George is decamping to APC to help in transforming Lagos State into Dubai of Africa.
9. Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has said that having Nigerians in diaspora vote during the next general election in 2019 will be an uphill task for the commission due to paucity of funds.
According to him, conducting Diaspora voting will cost Nigeria millions of dollars and logistic requirements.
10. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (APC, Kano Central) on Wednesday, said that Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, must not arrest Arewa Youths who asked Igbos to leave the North.
Kwankwaso told newsmen in Abuja that the youths should be engaged in a peaceful dialogue instead of the ongoing threats by the state government to arrest them.

The Newspapers – Things You Need To Know This Sunday

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.
2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.
3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.
4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.
5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.
6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.
7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.
8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.
9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.
10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
