The Newspapers: Things You Need To Know This Friday
Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:
1. The suspended Secretary to the government of the federation, Engr. Babachir Lawal has again snubbed the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on humanitarian crises in the North East. The public hearing which was scheduled for Thursday at the SGF’s request for 10.am, had all the Committee members waiting for two hours without his presence. The development has, however, infuriated some Senators who said those advising Lawal were doing him no good.
2. The Naira on Thursday depreciated slightly against the dollar at the parallel market.
The currency closed at N390 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro traded at N495 and N415, respectively. At the Bureau De Change window, the naira was sold at N362, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N490 and N420, respectively.
3. The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, Thursday evening denied that he snubbed the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at a public function in Lagos. Oba Akiolu who spoke through one of the white cap chiefs of Lagos, Lateef Aderibigbe Ajose, said his gesture was not ‘snub’ as being dubbed but the culturally acclaimed way of greeting a monarch in Lagos.
4. A former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu, has insisted that he did not betray ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan, who was the party’s presidential candidate in 2015, saying the people voted the former president out of office and not that he betrayed him. He was reacting to the allegation by Jonathan that he was betrayed.
5. The Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, on Thursday expressed hope that the 2017 Appropriation Bill would be ready for President Muhammadu Buhari to append his signature next week despite the current hitches. Lawan disclosed this to State House correspondents after he met behind closed doors with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
6. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Thursday said it had offered 100 million dollars to authorised dealers as its intervention to stabilise the foreign exchange market. Isaac Okorafor, Acting Director of the Corporate Communications Department of CBN. disclosed this in a statement on Thursday. Okorafor, however, said that no intervention was made in the retail window in Thursday’s auction.
7. The Nigeria Police Force says it will arrest the lawmaker representing Gombe-Central Senatorial District, Senator Danjuma Goje, if he continues to ignore its invitation. The Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Moshood, said this during a breakfast television show titled, ‘Sunrise Daily’ on Channels Television. There are, however, reports that the police have returned to Goje the things recovered from his house.
8. Troops of the 21 Brigade on Thursday engaged the Boko Haram terrorists in gun battle at the Sambisa Forest leading to huge casualties on the part of the terrorists. A statement from Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lt Col Kinsley Samuel, said the terrorists paid dearly as the troops neutralized 15 of them and wounded several others.
9. Senator Ahmed Makarfi, the factional leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said a victory for Ali Modu Sheriff at the Supreme Court will mark the end of the party.
Makarfi also said that if his faction is defeated at the apex court, that would end the crisis-ridden opposition party. He accused some prominent members of the ruling APC of foisting Sheriff on the PDP against the wish of the majority.
10. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has called for the restructuring of Nigeria, to promote economic development and unity. Atiku stated this in a speech he delivered at a public presentation in Abuja on Thursday. He noted that the country was at crossroads and that only an adjustment in the political structure will solve the nation’s problem.

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.
2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.
3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.
4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.
5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.
6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.
7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.
8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.
9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.
10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
