The Newspapers: Things You Need to Know This Friday

1. President Muhammadu Buhari has been asked to ignore those calling on him to return to the country or honourably resign. This call was made by some group of protesters in Abuja on Thursday who were in support of his continuous medical vacation. The group advised leader of the anti-Buhari protesters, Charles Oputa, otherwise known as Charlyboy to work on his moral character and stop intruding into governance.
2. Relatively, civil society organization under the platform of OurMumuDonDo has insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari must resume or resign from office if truly he is a man of integrity as he claims. They made the call on Thursday on the fourth day of their protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja. The group accused aides of President Muhammadu Buhari of “holding him captive.”
3. Nigeria’s Senate president, Bukola Saraki has fired his Director of Protocol, Arthur Ndiwe, Head of Administration, Mrs Folasade Adigun and 96 others to scale down the number of his aides. With the mass sack, the Senate President’s assistants have now been reduced from over 300 to a little above 200.
4. In line with the Army policy of rotating overstayed troops in special operations, soldiers of 29 Battalion based in Port Harcourt, have been rotated and returned to their main unit amid cheers and jubilation from their families and colleagues. This was disclosed in a statement by Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 6 Division Nigerian Army.
5. The National Emergency Management Agency on Thursday received 128 stranded Nigerians who voluntarily returned to the country from Libya. NEMA said the returnees include 126 males and two females. Two females and four males had health issues among them.
6. Boko Haram insurgents have launched fresh attacks in Ghumbili community, in Madagali local government area of Adamawa state. This was confirmed by Adamawa State Emergency Management, Agency, ADSEMA, boss, Haruna Furo. He said the attack started from about 10.23pm on Wednesday until about 3am on Thursday morning, but that no life was lost. He said the insurgents burnt down several houses and looted belongings.
7. A picture trending online has revealed how a lady on military camouflage was forced to pull down her trousers and became half naked. A military officer, who was supervising the operation bent over the victim, who was afraid and appeared to be begging another officer whose face was not revealed in the picture. This has, however, generated negative comments against the military.
8. The Benue State government has warned Nnamdi Kanu of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) over his constant claims that the state is part of Biafra territory. The state warned Kanu and his group to leave it out of its purported secessionist territory. State Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Lawrence Onoja (Jnr.), gave the warning to the protagonists of IPOB and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, at a news conference in Makurdi.
9. In education, Abia, Rivers, Edo, Imo and Bayelsa are the best performing states in the 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination. While Abia came out with 81.54 per cent, Rivers State scored 78.59 per cent. Edo State was third with 77.41 per cent while Imo State recorded 76.46 per cent. At 74.38 per cent and 71.83 per cent were Bayelsa and Anambra states who are in the fifth and sixth positions.
10. Three suspects have been remanded in prison by a Chief Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday for alleged murder of a University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), lecturer, Dr. Eeba Lebari. The suspects are the deceased’s gateman, Christopher Kinanee, Lebari Robert Tambari, and Ibrahim Useni (deceased housemaid).

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.
2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.
3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.
4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.
5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.
6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.
7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.
8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.
9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.
10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
