Jega finally bows out as INEC chairman
The former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Tuesday predicted brighter future for Nigeria and the commission. Speaking with newsmen shortly after he bowed out after five years of service in the commission, Jega expressed appreciation for the opportunity given to him and other INEC management staff to serve the country. “We feel great; we thank God Almighty for the opportunity to serve the country. “The future is bright for the commission and the country,’’ he said. The former INEC boss had earlier handed over the mantle of leadership to Alhaji Mohammed Wali, a national commissioner, at a closed door ceremony. The Secretary of the commission, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu, told newsmen that Jega handed over to Wali pending the appointment of a new chairman by President Muhammadu Buhari. Meanwhile, a daily bulletin published by the commission said that Wali, representing Sokoto State (North West) in the commission, would end his tenure on Aug. 11. It recalled that that Jega, with six national commissioners, were inaugurated by former President Goodluck Jonathan on June 30, 2010. The commissioners are retired Col. M.K. Hammanga (Adamawa), Dr Ishmael Igbani (Rivers), Prof. Lai Olurode (Osun), Dame Gladys Nwafor (Abia), Mrs Thelma Iremiren (Delta) and Dr Nuru Yakubu (Yobe). It added that four other national commissioners were also expected to leave the commission in July and August.
