Maiduguri has reportedly been off the national grid for two months as a result of some power stations and transmission lines outside the city being bombed by Boko Haram.
Channels Television reported that when repairs commenced, the insurgents laid land mines which injured officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria. While repairs have progressed under heavy military escort, residents and business owners now have to rely on their power generating sets for electricity.
It was also reported that there’s been an increase in the price after it was reported last week that the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) may go up. It was also alleged that fuel marketers in the city have resorted to hoarding petroleum products, triggering a price inflation.
A black marketer, Mohammed Abdulrahman told Channels Television;
“A litre was N200 when fuel was available, but when it became very scarce fuel was sold for N450 to N500.
“But to be honest when the product is scarce, that’s when we make more profit. But when the fuel was available sometimes you’ll be here the whole day and maybe only five or six cars would stop to buy from you.”
A business owner, Abdulmumini Bello on the other hand said;
“Every blessed day you spend N5,000 on fuel and there is no power everything is now expensive.
“The government should consider and help us out of this difficulty. We are facing the problem of power outage and petrol, and there is poverty.”
A motorist, Maikudi Kwajaffa also accused filling stations of perfecting the art of deception. He said;
“If you go to the filling station you’ll see the display on their dashboard saying N162 but actually if you say you want to buy N2,000 fuel, they’ll just carry their calculator and begin to calculate.
“If you go to another place they’ll say it’s N190 or N180. I don’t know if they are waiting for the government to increase the price, but hoarding the fuel makes it so scarce and you know in Maiduguri it’s about two months now we don’t have light so most people want to take in jerrycan or gallon.”
DPR Comptroller, Abubakar Ciroma who admitted that the agency is battling marketers over pricing, added that there are no fuel queues in Maiduguri. He also blamed the long distance between Maiduguri and major petrol hubs such as Lagos and Port Harcourt for the shortfall in supply that has spooked the marketers.
He said;
“Also the insecurity challenges along the road. You know we have had so many cases of blockage on the road and so on.
“Some of the vehicles break down because they are old and they are coming all the way from Lagos with the bad roads here and there.”
Ciroma also disclosed that the NNPC depot in the city which has a storage capacity of at least 20 million litres, has been non-functional for over 15 years, making it impossible to stockpile products for the rainy day.

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.
2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.
3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.
4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.
5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.
6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.
7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.
8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.
9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.
