$2.1b Arms Scandal: Jonathan Under Fire For Defending Dasuki

Published

on

Former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has come under severe criticism from some Nigerians for absolving then National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, of culpability over the alleged misappropriation of the sum of $2.2 billion.

Mr. Dasuki, who has been in detention since December 1, 2015, was arrested by the State Security Service for allegedly embezzling $2.2 billion meant to purchase equipment for the Nigerian military in its battle against the terrorist Boko Haram group.

The scandal which has been dubbed Dasukigate, has also seen other top personalities including politicians and both serving and retired military officers face probe by anti-corruption agencies.

Though, Dasuki who has been at the centre of the scandal has maintained that Goodluck Jonathan approved spending procured by his office, Jonathan has remained silent over the issue.

However, the former president broke his silence over the issue on Monday, October 24, saying that it was not possible for the man at the centre to have stolen such a whooping amount under his government.

Jonathan who spoke at the famous Oxford Union, Oxford United Kingdom, on youth entrepreneurship argued that allegations about the $2.2 scam was faulty because his administration had purchased lots of weapons for the army from the said stolen funds.

But the explanation by the former president has attracted a backlash from some Nigerians who have been watching from the sidelines as several top personalities were linked to the scandal.

Some of the angry commentators labeled Jonathan as shameless for defending Dasuki over the scandal.

Others called on the former president to disclose the truth about the $2.2 scam instead of giving excuses for his inaction.

See some reactions to the issue below:

Jimoh Adebayo Nureni: “Jonathan can be hired as a lawyer to defend Dansuki. GEJ is not even ashamed, the then minister of state (Defence), Muliu Obanikoro to have explained how some cash were looted and shared involving Governor Fayose (The noise maker).”

Chuka Dennis: “So where did we get the money to buy all those things?” Who he dey ask? Me?
Oga GEJ, thats is what we want to hear from U. Tell us what really happened. Dasuki has been singing. People have been arrested. Many of them that recieved money has been returning them. OK, where did they get the money they are returning? Anzaaa!!!”

Amos Akinbinuade: “Mr.GEJ, please do not give another colouration to the issue of Dasuki. The government did not say that he stole the money ,but, using it for the purpose for which it was not meant for.”

Segun Abayomi: “What GEJ is not saying is that most of the war assets purchased were scraps paid for at the price of new and the bulk of the money were shared with his instructions for issues that has nothing to do with the purpose written on paper. Now, these are the issues he should have commented on. Having watched GEJ approach to governance and his corrupt ridden government, I’m convinced nigerians did the right thing to vote him out. The guy so much disappoint after putting so much trust in him.”

Where do you stand on the issue, do you believe the $2.1b arms scandal is all a lie?
