Rising Star Megaboy Raze Brings Fresh Twist to Afrobeats

Published

on

Afrobeats has become Spotify’s fastest-growing genre, with a 550% increase since 2017. This growth is driven by a new generation of artists pushing the genre’s boundaries. Over the years, Afrobeats has evolved from a distinctly Nigerian sound to a global sensation, resonating from Lagos to London and beyond.

This tremendous growth is thanks to the emergence of an enormous amount of ambitious new/upcoming talents in the industry. What started as a movement addressing Nigeria’s social and political issues has now evolved into a genre that celebrates Africa’s beauty, joy, and rich culture.

The younger generation of artists is using it to shift perceptions of the continent, and one of these artists is Aremu Riliwan, also known as Megaboy Raze.

Born in Oshodi, Lagos, and currently based in Somolu, Megaboy Raze has a unique take on Afrobeat. His sound is soft and soulful, yet still makes you move. He started making music officially in 2023, but the journey hasn’t been straightforward.

“I wasn’t sure about my sound at first “I felt I wasn’t good enough. Confidence was a big issue, and I wasn’t sure how to shape my craft,” he admits.

Like many young Nigerian artists, Megaboy Raze took time to figure it out.

He spent hours practicing, listening to the top Afrobeat stars, and learning how to blend creativity with appeal. “I listened to a lot of artists I admire. It took time, but I was determined to make music that connects with people,” he said.

That determination paid off when he bagged the Next Rated Award in his department at school, a moment that solidified his belief in his talent. “If I can do this small, then I know I can do it bigger,” he said.

He believes that what makes his music stand out is how relatable it is. His latest track, Ayeloja, tells the emotional story of a friend who passed away while chasing his dreams.

“It’s a song about how life is short and we should cherish every moment. I think people can really connect with that message, especially with the way things are now.”

His music for him, which he describes as “music from sound to soul,” is more than just a vibe. For him, it’s a way to encourage listeners to believe in themselves and appreciate the beauty in life. “I want my music to remind people that anything is possible. Yes, there will be challenges, but you can overcome them. Give love a chance and don’t give up,” he says.

When asked about his upcoming projects, he said he is currently working on a love song collaboration titled First Priority, and he’s excited to see how people will react to it.

“I featured someone on it, and it’s different from what I’ve done before. I think people will vibe with it,” he says. With a raving desire to shine in the industry, to make sure his voice is heard, it’s no wonder that the Afrobeat is experiencing an incredible speed in evolution. Huge ambitions drive these upcoming artists.

As Afrobeat continues to grow, artists like Megaboy Raze are showing that the genre is more than just beats and rhythm—it’s about storytelling, emotion, and connection to the ear and soul and for Raze, the journey is just beginning.

Meet the Man Who Turned Hype Into a Science: Emmy Blaq, Nigeria’s G.O.A.T. of Hype

Published

on

If you have ever been at a Nigerian event and found yourself on your feet before the main act even stepped on stage, there is a good chance a hype man was responsible. But not just any hype man. Emmy Blaq, born Ikechukwu Emmanuel Chima and raised in Auchi, Edo State, has spent the last few years quietly becoming the most talked-about name in that profession, and the Nigerian press has taken notice. Punch, Vanguard, The Guardian Nigeria, The Nation, and Independent Newspaper have all sat down with him, and every conversation leads back to the same thing: this man does not just make noise; he makes moments.
What makes Emmy Blaq different is the journey behind the energy. Before the stages, the collaborations with Waje on her “Waje 2.0” album, DJ Consequence, and DJ Kaywise on the massively streamed “Joor Party Mix” series, he was repairing generators, cutting hair, and sewing clothes in Auchi. His first professional hype gig happened at a local fast food spot called Valchi, and the crowd response that night changed everything. He told The Nation directly: “My passion for entertainment and desire to make people happy led me into the craft.” Punch also captured his bigger mission when he said that hype men deserve more than what they currently earn, a statement that sparked a real conversation across Nigerian entertainment circles.
With over 1.7 million TikTok followers, 23.6 million TikTok likes, a viral “Wife Material” challenge that landed on Pulse Nigeria’s top ten social media moments of 2021, and an international performance at the Cameroon International Music Festival that Cameroonian media described as electrifying, Emmy Blaq is not building toward something. He is already there. The G.O.A.T. of Hype is not a title he gave himself and hoped would stick. It is one the rooms keep confirming every single time he grabs the mic.
