Rather than presenting wealth simply as a symbol of luxury, Nino De Brown uses the record to explore the complicated emotions behind wanting money, needing money, and understanding what money cannot provide.
The song immediately establishes its theme with the memorable refrain:
“Money no dey buy happiness, I know am
But still I want am
Money be the root of all evil, I hear am
