Photos: Humanitarian Minister solicits more effort towards addressing the menace of drugs and substance abuse
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has stated that the nation needs to put in more efforts towards addressing the menace of drug and substance abuse among youths in the country and the menace should not be left to government, individuals and rehabs alone to tackle but should be a collective responsibility with everyone playing their roles.
She made the statement on Thursday during an event on Awareness Campaign Against Drug and Substance Abuse/ Illicit Trafficking held on the 29th September, 2022 in Abuja.
Farouq represented by the Deputy Director Social Development of the Ministry, Mr Chogudo Sule Aliyu; said the government of the day is very much concerned about the growing number of controlled substance abusers in the country. The priority is advocacy and we have to tell our people and youth that abusing drugs is risky, not good and it is illegal. She called on stakeholders for urgent intervention.
Speaking further, Farouq commended the Ministry for committing resources to this initiative of shaping the lives of the youth in our society and expressed optimism that as designed, the event with the Theme “Addressing Drug Challenges in health and Humanitarian Crises” will help to create a better society for all.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary, hFederal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Nasir Sani-Gwarzo mni, NPOM; represented by the Deputy Director Social Development, Mr Peter Audu; said that the adverse effect of drug abuse on industry, education and the family as well as its contribution to violence, crime, financial problems, homelessness and vagrancy, call for urgent attention of government, Development Partners, National and International Organisations in managing it’s effect on the individuals, groups and the communities.
Gwarzo informed that there Ministry will be very much committed to addressing issues of drug addiction using system approach mechanism across the country in line with the programme’s objective.
There were goodwill messages from representatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr innocent Osigabo and National Agency for Persons Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Mr Aganran Ganiyu, who noted that Drug and Substance Abuse have negatively impacted the society.
The event was attended by the representatives of the Federal Ministries of Health, Women Affairs, Country Directors of UNODC, WHO, NAFDAC, NAPTIP, NDLEA ,NYSC, secondary school students and other relevant stakeholders.
