1. Polytechnic lecturers, under the umbrella of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), have threatened to resume their suspended strike over the failure of the Federal Government to fulfil the April 2021 Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed with them to end their strike action. This was contained in the communique issued at the end of the union’s 16th National Delegates Conference (NDC), held in Asaba, Delta State, between 6th-10th December 2021.

2. People of Ihitte Ihube autonomous community in the Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo state have been thrown into mourning following the discovery of the remains of their abducted traditional ruler, Eze Pau Ogbu. Eze Ogbu and a youth leader in the community were kidnapped on Sunday after his palace and vehicle were razed.

3. President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday left Abuja for Istanbul, Turkey, to attend the third Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit, hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Republic of Turkey. Buhari, according to a statement by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, was accompanied on the trip by his wife, Aisha; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama and others.

4. The House of Representatives has urged security agencies to remove multiple checkpoints on highways leading to the South East, ahead of the yuletide. This followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Obinnna Chidoka (Anambra-PDP) at plenary on Thursday in Abuja.

5. Cross River Governor, Prof Ben Ayade has disclosed that the state does not belong to any single person or group but to the people adding that no one can determine the faith and destiny of the people except God. Ayade made the disclosure on Thursday during the decamping of Arc ,Bassey Ndem, and others from PDP to the All Progressives Congress in Calabar.

6. One Habibu of Sayen Lemu in Dutsen Abba of Zaria local government area, Kaduna State has been killed by bandits and three of his children kidnapped. Sayen Lemu is a village close to Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria and also not far away from where the bandits operated on Monday along the Kaduna-Zaria highway.

7. Hearing in the dispute between Rivers State government, SAIPEM SPA and six others, over alleged $119 million power plant fraud, has been adjourned till January 11, 2022. Justice Okogbue Gbasam of the Rivers State High Court deferred hearing on the matter following the absence of some of the Defendants in court.

8. No fewer than 18 serving members of the National Youth Service Corps in Delta State escaped death by the whisker when a commercial bus conveying them from the orientation camp at Issele-Uku, in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the State en route to Warri, went up in flames. It was learnt that some corps members lost their valuables, including luggage and phones, which were burnt in the bus.

9. Goods and property valued at millions of naira were on Thursday destroyed when fire gutted three shops at Gbade Plaza on Nnamdi Azikwe Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State. The fire, which started around 4.30 am, was said to have gutted three of the 56 shops in the three-storey plaza.

10. The House of Representatives, yesterday, urged the Federal Government to take steps to cushion the effects of rising cost of cooking gas in the country. It also mandated its Committee on Gas Resources to liaise with Minister of State For Petroleum Resources, Timipreye Sylva, to proffer a lasting solution to the high cost of cooking gas.

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.

2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.

3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.

4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.

5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.

6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.

7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.

8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.

9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.

10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
