1. Former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd), on Sunday, denied viral social media reports that he was dead. Babangida said he was alive and bubbling. Reports emerged on social media of the former military ruler’s death on Sunday morning. But his media aide, Prince Kassim Agegbua, said Babangida is very much alive. In a statement titled: “IBB is alive and bubbling,” Agegbua said fake news has become a continuous tool to spread the rumour of his principal’s death.
2. As Abuja residents continue to lament the ban on Keke Napep, the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, has said that the restriction placed on commercial tricycle operators to certain parts of the city was one of the most difficult decisions that the FCT administration had to make. Mr Anthony Ogunleye, Chief Press Secretary to the Minister, in a statement on Sunday, said Bello disclosed this during the presentation of the FCT’s 2020 statutory budget to the joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on the FCT. The minister said that the decision was imperative because commercial tricycles by law should not operate on the express and highways along with vehicles as they pose dangers to both passengers and riders.
3. The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has accused Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Phillip Shuaibu of unleashing mayhem on members of the party in Edo State. Oshiomhole also alleged that Obaseki and Shuaibu do not have a political base in their locality, describing the two who claimed to have learnt from him as poor students. Oshiomhole said as a sign that the duo lack grassroots support, they both lost their polling units during the last Presidential election and that he did not teach them to lose elections.
4. Following the submission of his list of commissioners to the legislature, Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has been criticized for not covering all interests in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Some chieftains loyal to former Governor, Olusegun Osoba, on Sunday openly rejected the names. The loyalists under the aegis of “Osoba Political Family”, said that some individuals who are conservatively greedy businessmen and hijackers of power have succeeded in confusing Abiodun. This was contained in a statement signed jointly by Alhaja Yemisi Ayinla, Mrs Toyin Usifo, Pastor Matthew Oladele, Mr. Jelili Onayemi and Chief Labeth Abodunrin.
5. The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, has attacked Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, over the killing of 42 of their sons and daughters during the 2019 general elections. The IYC launched the attack in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Alfred Kemepado. The IYC, in the statement, reminded Wike that 42 of its kinsmen in Rivers State died in the violence that characterized the election that made him a governor. The youths, who issued the statement at Harry’s Town, expressed disappointment that despite their death, Wike had yet to give them befitting burials. They also said that Wike was dancing on the graves of 42 of their kinsmen by threatening to remove an Ijaw King in Rivers State
6. The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has condemned in strong terms the killing of aid workers by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno. The aid workers were abducted by terrorists in July 2019 on their way to a remote community in the northeast to provide humanitarian support to victims of Boko Haram violence. A statement by ACF National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim, in Kaduna on Sunday, said ACF was shocked and saddened by the sad news of yet another killing of four aid workers including a woman by the Boko Haram terrorists in Borno.
7. The Action Democratic Party (ADP) governorship candidate in the 2019 election, Babatunde Gbadamosi, has urged Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to wake up to the challenges as he clocks 200 days in office. Speaking to newsmen in Lagos, the ADP candidate scored Sanwo-Olu low across all sectors of governance, saying that the governor could have done better.
8. Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has threatened to expose corrupt leaders in the north. Kanu, in a broadcast on Radio Biafra, claimed he would come forward with concrete, verifiable evidence if any further action is taken against the Chairman of Air Peace Airline, Chief Allen Onyema. According to him, it was a show of hypocrisy, for people from the South East and South-South to be slammed with corruption allegations, as if all the leaders in the north were saints.
9. The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank has approved a $124.2 million loan to finance the Urban Water Sector Reform and Akure Water Supply and Sanitation Project in Nigeria. The amount also includes African Growing Together Fund (AGTF) loan of $20 million. The total project cost is $222.69 million and will run for five years, starting from 2020 to 2025. This was contained in a statement by the bank.
10. The Karaye Emirate Council in Kano State has dismissed District Head of Kiru, Alhaji Ibrahim Hamza and that of Rimin-Gado, Alhaji Shehu Muhammad, for disloyalty. The council made the resolution during its second meeting presided over by the Emir of Karaye, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar II at his palace in Karaye. This was contained in a statement by the Information Officer of Karaye Emirate Council, Alhaji Haruna Gunduwawa on Sunday in Kano.

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.
2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.
3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.
4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.
5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.
6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.
7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.
8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.
9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.
10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
