1. Atletico Madrid players are now in Uyo, ahead of their friendly against Nigeria.
The Europa League winners arrived the country via the Ibom International Airport on Monday evening. It is the LaLiga’s first time in the West African country. Diego Simeone’s men will take on the Super Eagle team B, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Tuesday.
2. The Defence Headquarters has said that a total of 35 herdsmen terrorising Benue State were killed at the weekend. The Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General John Agim, in a statement, also said a suspected bandit, one Adamu Abdullahi, was also arrested in Nasarawa with deadly ammunition.
3. Alhaji Kawu Baraje, leader of the new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) which fused into the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said the group will remain in the ruling party. He stated this on Monday in Abuja while speaking with newsmen after a closed-door meeting with the members of APC’s National Working Committee (NWC). Baraje told newsmen that the group had begun sorting out its grievances with APC leadership.
4. A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday ordered that a warrant of arrest be served on Victor Uwajeh, ex-investigator for the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property (SPIPRPP). Justice John Tsoho gave the order after listening to submissions of the FG’s counsel. The Federal Government had filed a four-count charge bothering on forgery, impersonation and fraud against the defendant who failed to appear in court.
5. The suspected killers of the DPO of Rumuorlumeni, SP Kingsley Chukwuegu have been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command. State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Zaki said the gang was smashed by the IGP Monitoring Unit, led by ACP Bennett Igwe after weeks of thorough investigation. Zaki said the gang that allegedly murdered the DPO was led by Uche Ogbonna and second in command, Chidiebere Oberenwa who was equally arrested in Lagos.
6. Archbishop of Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, John Onaiyekan, has announced that Catholic faithful in Abuja will today protest the state of the nation, especially the killing of Christians across different states. The cleric said the protest would send a message about “positive change”. A statement he signed on Monday explained that the march was aimed at expressing disgust at the ongoing killings in the country.
7. The Presidency on Monday dismissed the allegation that President Muhammadu Buhari gave the leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, N40million for “transportation” when the body visited the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu said the allegation was false.
He advised those who made the claim to check their facts, saying such money could have been given to CAN under the past Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government.
8. The Coalition of Northern Groups on Monday in Kaduna asked President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar not to contest the presidency of the country in 2019. The group said such leaders who were responsible for the country’s downfall should be led by young Nigerians that could take it to the Promised Land.
The CNG’s position was contained in a communiqué it issued shortly after the end of a two-day summit held at the Arewa House, Kaduna on Monday.
9. Requiem masses were held in all parishes of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi on Monday for the murdered priests and parishioners of Saint Ignatius Quasi Parish, Mbalom in Gwer Local Government Council of the state. The priests- Felix Tyolaha and Joseph Gor were killed alongside other church members by suspected herdsmen. Report says Pope Francis had despatched a delegation of 50 bishops for the burial, which is expected to hold at the Ave Maria Prayer Pilgrimage Ground, on the Ayati hilltop in Gwer local government council.
10. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to be prepared to accept defeat in the 2019 general election. PDP gave the challenge while noting that “all indices,” including those released by the Presidency, show that Nigerians across board have overtly rejected him for another four years in office. This was contained in a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan.

1. President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast today, Sunday, August 4, 2024. Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, announced this in a statement, on Saturday, saying the broadcast would hold at 7am.
2. The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Yusuf Lawal, on Saturday confirmed the killing of four persons along Baga Road in Maiduguri, Borno State during the nationwide #EndBadGoverment protest. He said Boko Haram elements infiltrated the protesters and killed four persons on Thursday with explosives at a filling station.
3. Many persons have been feared killed while others sustained injuries as hoodlums clashed with security operatives in Kano. It was gathered that Rijiyar Lemo, Kurna to Bachirawa areas in Fagge Local Government, Kofar Nassarawa in Kano municipal and Unguwa Uku area of Tarauni Local Government are the worst hit areas.
4. The leadership of the organised labour, on Saturday, warned the Nigeria Police Force and other security forces to stop what it described as a “massacre” of protesters carrying out nationwide demonstrations against hunger in the land.
5. Leading Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has said over 50 protesters were arrested in Abuja on the third day of the demonstration against hardship in the land.
6. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has urged the police and other security agencies to stop shooting and killing protesters demanding good governance in Nigeria. Atiku in a statement on Saturday, questioned the professionalism of the security agencies in the handling of the ongoing demonstrations.
7. Some of the organisers and supporters of the ongoing protest have set up pages to raise over N4bn through GoFundMe, a popular online crowdfunding platform. A check on Saturday showed that a total of N4.1bn had been benchmarked to be donated through accounts created by three GoFundMe users.
8. Tragedy struck again in Imo State on Saturday evening when some gunmen reportedly shot dead the President-General of Umucheke Okwe autonomous community in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, Hyginus Ohazurike. Six village heads from the autonomous community were also allegedly killed by the gunmen.
9. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh has said his men were not responsible for the death of a teenager in the Kubwa area of the FCT. In a viral video, a man claimed that police, while dispersing protesters, shot dead a teenager in the Kubwa area.
10. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has said President Bola Tinubu is keeping an eye on the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstrations across the country.
