My earpiece plugged -listening to Burnaboy’s “ye”, y’all know that song got vibes. But that’s not the point am about to make. Am about to give my naked opinion on what everybody writes on (youth/teen drug abuse and unhealthy relationships) and I don’t know what to write cos it looks like it’s everywhere already, arguably.

Its funny how drug abuse and unhealthy relationships is still thriving among youths and teens despite so many books, talks , Campaigns Seminars and all on drug abuse and unhealthy relationships.

You might not like what am about to write cos am about to take sides here but hey, chill, be patient, read on and lets see who’s side am on….

Recently I came across an article by Dorcas Oluremi Fareo on drug abuse and this caught my attention, “Adolescents prefer an autonomous and independent life that is free from adult control”.  I must say I totally agree with her (tell me what u think in the comment section).

A lot of us (youths} detest the interference of adults in our so-called personal life and take confidentiality serious, so often we see their care and show of concern as ‘intruding’, we therefore seek solace from our friends who have little or no experience of what we are going through or from “frenemies”  who are actually pleased with what we are going through. So 80% of the time our situation ends up worse, very worse that we end up moving from fry pan to fire.

Understand me, am not judging, have heard some youths say it’s due to non-availability of someone to talk to, some say it’s because everyone is judgemental and no one understands or truly feels what you going through. Well I tell people when there is no one to talk to, talk to God, He always listens and always understands.

The kind of people you associate most times speak a great deal of whom you are, whenever my mum is inconvenient with a friend of mine she brings up this old saying, “show me your friend and I would tell you who you are”.  I can’t say she’s always correct but most of the time she does come back saying “I told you”.

Well we all know what drug abuse is, right? Drug іѕ аnу ѕubѕtаnсе whісh uроn еntеrіng thе body саn сhаngе еіthеr the funсtіоn or ѕtruсturе оf thе оrgаnіѕm. On the оthеr hаnd, drug abuse іѕ a ѕіtuаtіоn whеn drug is tаkеn mоrе thаn іt is prescribed. It could bе seen аѕ thе uѕе оf іllісіt drugѕ, оr the abuse оf рrеѕсrірtіоn or over-the-counter drugѕ. Drug аbuѕе саn bе further dеfіnеd as thе dеlіbеrаtе uѕе оf chemical ѕubѕtаnсеѕ fоr reasons other thаn іntеndеd mеdісаl purposes and whісh rеѕultѕ іn рhуѕісаl, mental emotional оr ѕосіаl іmраіrmеnt of thе uѕеr..

A friend of mine told me he started smoking due to loneliness and depression which is also an important topic to discuss. At that time he had a friend in his department whom they were just coursemates, then from regular discussions, nightclasses and so on they became very good friends. One thing led to the other from visitations, football clubs and so on, that was how he became influenced./ At first he was uncomfortable, then he derived pleasure doing it saying it gives him high mood and happiness, RIDICULOUS!, and now today he is a “smokologist”, he smokes anywhere, anytime, anybrand. Infact I call him ambassador.

It could have been Drugs! Don’t Do Drugs! Don’t Do Drugs with friends!

You may say “I cant fall” but you don’t fall all of a sudden, it happens gradually. By the time you have fallen, it almost impossible to stop and that’s when it looks sudden. So take it or leave it, if you do not stop your relationship with those your bad friends or those friends you call bad guys, you are getting yourself into something dangerous, might no just be drugs.

it could have been Drugs! Don’t Do Drugs! Don’t Do Drugs with friends!

A lot people give different reasons for drug abuse,  the government blames it on pharmacists, pharmaceuticals, smugglers. Parents blame themselves for lack of responsibility to oversee the affairs of their ward or children, but what do the youths blame it on?. Ask yourself whether you are abusing drugs or not;  what kind of friends do I have? What influence do my friends have on me and what do they speak about my personality?

Associating with the wrong people would only make you do wrong things. I tell you if you cant change them don’t join them.  A lot of youths have been Manipulated i.e. when a friend  tries to influence your decisions, actions or emotions. Manipulation is not always easy to spot, but some examples are convincing you to do things you wouldn’t normally feel comfortable with just because they are doing it. Others try to Belittle- making you feel bad about yourself, calling you names, making rude remarks about who you hang out with, your family or what you look like, and making fun of you – even if it’s played off as just a joke. Many don’t know when to RUN or TakeTheir Stand. My advice to you is to stand firm and steady, they all will come back to celebrate your life, while theirs might have depreciated….

I am not saying there cant be other causes of drug abuse, but among  youths the major ones are these stated above, others could be Youthful Exuberance caused by  adolescent adrenaline trigerring them to feel wrong sensations which later becomes habit, people affected by these are majorly people with low self-esteem, who are looking for euphoria feelings and what they could hang on to feel okay and  to “feel among”.  Others could be from heart breaks or feeling of betrayal from a loved one or a life partner, some might be loss of a loved one or family. But whatever the cause might be it basically narrows down to having good company (keeping healthy relationships). …. Am still not judging.

Before there can be a solution there has to be a problem, right?, so have you identified your problem or the problem?. Well am going to give some solutions from my own point of view, you might have to source for others through guidance and counselling, etc.

With the level of awareness available now about drug abuse, the prosecutions and even the judgement that follows when people discover you an addict, you don’t expect youths to go into drug abuse again but of course, You see your friends do it, they advice you to do it and state “stupid” benefits.. so  like I said earlier

Watch the relationship you keep. What makes a healthy relationship

  • Mutual respect
  • Trust
  • Honesty
  • Fairness/equality
  • Good communication.
  • Seek good Godly/Moral Counselling
  • Parents and adults should assess any unhealthy relationships, whether their own, or those of their children, as well as any co-occurring substance abuse and eliminate both. As adults, it is our job to protect ourselves and our children and seek help if necessary.

Finally if you, a partner or a friend needs help on drug abuse. Go to the right people, talk to a trustworthy family or friend. Don’t be quiet about it.
