“Winterfell” is the first episode of the eighth season of HBO’s fantasy television series Game of Thrones, and the 68th overall. It was written by Dave Hill, and directed by David Nutter. It aired yesterday April 14, 2019.
Daenerys Targaryen arrives alongside Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, Lord Varys, Missandei, and Grey Worm. Daenerys and Jon are not greeted well by the Northern Lords and Sansa as Jon Snow abandoned his position as King of the North and bent the knee to a Targaryen. In addition, with the destruction of the Wall, Sansa has ordered that all the Northern Lords and their allies are to retreat to Winterfell and fortify the castle against the inevitable undead attack. Daenerys and Jon ride the dragons as they deepen their relationship. Arya reunites with Jon, Gendry and the Hound. Samwell Tarly meets Daenerys, who thanks him for curing Jorah of his greyscale but is forced to admit she executed his father, Randyll and his brother, Dickon. Angered and heartbroken, Samwell is instructed by Bran to tell Jon about his true heritage, to which he reluctantly agrees. He visits Jon at the crypts and reveals to Jon how he is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna, making him the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Jaime Lannister arrives at Winterfell, and encounters Bran in the courtyard.
